National News: A two-day ‘Global Conference on Compressed Biogas (CBG)’ under the theme “Towards Progressive Policy Framework for a Robust CBG Foundation and Growth” is being held on April 17 and 18, 2023, in New Delhi. The Indian Federation of Green Energy (IFGE) and CBG Producer Forum are organising the event with support from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Union Minister for Petroleum, Natural Gas, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri, will inaugurate the conference. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, will also take part as the chief guest.

Objective
The objective of the CBG Conference is to apprise the industry of the initiatives taken by the government for the development of Compressed Biogas Industry and to identify the areas where policy modifications are required.

Key Discussions
The discussion will focus on Feedstock availability, CBG Offtake, Fermented Organic Manure, Carbon Credits, Incentives, Investment and Financing for CBG Industry and Biofuel Policies of different States and CBG producers on state policies and international experiences.

More than 200 delegates are expected to attend the conference, including representatives from OMCs like IOCL, HPCL, and GAIL as well as CBG Plant Developers, CBG Plant LOI Holders, Contractors, Prospective Investors, Consultants, Policy Makers, and Consultants.

Notably, organizations like Indian Oil Corporation, Verbio India, Canara Bank, IndianOil Adani Ventures Limited – IAV Biogas, SBI Capital, SIDBI, Praj Industries, and Maschinenfabrik Bernard KRONE GmbH are also supporting this conference.

India’s net zero target by 2070
India is dedicated to achieving its net zero target by 2070, and there are several initiatives taken to reduce emissions. Compressed Biogas (CBG) has also an important role to play in emission reduction and it is being promoted by the SATAT scheme (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation).

CBG is a renewable source of energy that can be produced from agricultural waste, municipal waste, and sewage. The Indian government has set a target to roll out 5000 Compressed Bio Gas plants across India in a phased manner, by 2023-24. These plants are expected to produce 15 million tonnes of CBG per annum.

CBG over CNG
CBG has a higher calorific value and properties similar to CNG and can be utilised as an alternative green renewable that can replace CNG in automotive, industrial, and commercial areas, given the abundance of biomass availability within the country.
